Upper School Music Educator
2 days ago
Green School Bali is a wall-less campus in the heart of the jungle, where education is lived, not delivered. Sustainability is our operational floor: how we care for resources day to day. Our deeper work is regeneration: participating in the continual transformation of relationships between humans, other-than-human life, and place.
In this living curriculum, music is not just a subject on the schedule or a show at the end of term. It is part of how the school moves and feels. Music brings attention, coordination, and creativity into relation with the land and community.
Our music program invites students to engage with music as a lived, shared practice. They learn with Balinese artists, experience gamelan, and explore global musical forms alongside marimba, rock band, electronic music, and whatever else emerges from student talent. The aim is simple: to expand imagination, build skill through practice, and develop respect for different ways of making sound.
Music is everywhere on campus, in rehearsals, informal jams, and frequent performances. It turns open structures and pathways into places of gathering and reminds students that music is not something to consume through headphones, but something they co-create with others.
Music also gives students a direct way to move through the 4 Ss:
- Sensing rhythm, mood, and what a space invites;
- Seeking patterns, ideas, and influences from different traditions;
- Shaping sound together through practice, performance, and feedback;
- Storytelling through the tones, textures, and atmospheres they create.
In this way, music becomes part of how students participate in their community, changing a space through what they play, being changed by the people and sounds around them, and experiencing creativity as something shared rather than solitary. It is energetic, hands-on, and central to the life of the Middle School.
