Duties

The incumbent will provide program management and technical expertise to CDC’s seasonal, avian, and pandemic influenza surveillance, prevention, and control activities. This will include oversight of Influenza Like Illness/ Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (ILI/SARI) programs for influenza and other respiratory pathogens detected through the sentinel surveillance platform. The job holder will be the primary agency contact with implementing partners and will provide comprehensive public health disease and surveillance advice and assistance directed to the development and readiness to detect, respond, and manage outbreaks of avian/human influenza, and other respiratory diseases assigned. The job holder will work with the CDC regional influenza office in Bangkok, Thailand and with multiple government and non-government partners in Indonesia to support robust influenza surveillance and research programs. The job holder will work with partners to maintain surveillance to monitor the circulation and impact of respiratory pathogens and to maintain laboratory support for surveillance and outbreak response. The job holder will work with partners to generate scientific evidence to drive influenza control policies in Indonesia. The position requires heavy partner contact that includes mid-level officials at host country ministries and a wide variety of implementing partners.

The job holder serves as a locally employed (LE) staff for the US CDC Indonesia Influenza Program, located in the CDC Office in Jakarta, Indonesia. The position will report to the Global Health Security (GHS) Program Manager, a senior LE staff position, that serves under the US CDC Country Director in Indonesia, who manages a diverse portfolio of Global Health Security, Global Immunization, Influenza and COVID-19 activities. The position will receive technical support and strategic guidance from the Director of the US CDC regional influenza program in Bangkok. The basic functions of this position will include:
Provide epidemiological expertise in support of agency’s influenza and other respiratory disease activities.

Work with the host country ministry of health or other government ministries and national, regional and local partners to support a regional ILI/SARI surveillance and diagnostic network to enable sharing of information to characterize risk, prevent disease spread, and enhance control efforts.

Create assessment tools and epidemiologic surveillance programs related to early and ongoing influenza pandemic detection.

Provide advice on sustaining and integrating current influenza surveillance networks, such as sentinel sites in selected hospitals in the identified priority areas; and the integration of additional respiratory pathogens into those networks as directed.

Support research work on burden and transmission of influenza

Represent the agency at technical working groups, conferences and meetings on influenza and respiratory diseases-related issues.

Liaise between host country ministry, CDC Country Office, and Program staff at Headquarters on both technical and programmatic activities.

Work on other respiratory disease activities if they intersect with influenza programming or surveillance.

Qualifications and Evaluations

**EXPERIENCE**: Five years of mid
- level public health experience is required in a field directly related to emerging or respiratory pathogen infectious disease surveillance that involves coordination with an international agency or implementing partner.

**JOB KNOWLEDGE**:
**The position requires**: a) knowledge of the epidemiology of influenza and other respiratory infections; b) detailed knowledge of seasonal and avian influenza surveillance principles; and c) knowledge of laboratory procedures and methodologies used in testing for influenza and emerging infections, quality assurance standards and methods, and equipment used for specialized laboratory procedures.
